Ortner Annual Challenge Day 2006 - 6th May 2006

John Amery (the Ortner BC captain) won the toss and choose the Oxfordshire station for the 500m race course from the Reading Schools boat house to the life buoy above Reading Rowing Club.

The line up of the Ortner crew was Paul Stevenson, Will Rand, John Amery, Nick Mulleneux, Martin Smith, Garry Pike, Joe Prewett, and Oli Staines were expertly coxed by RUBC's Will M.

On boating, the Ortner crew discovered that RUBC had sabotaged their boat, loosening the joint bolts and allowing water to flood in!! After fixing the leak the crew had a good paddle and warm up. Things were looking good.

RUBC novices, in very un-sportsman like behavior, jumped the start, which set the crews off level. Ortner took off at 46, and settled to 36. This however was not enough to keep them level with RUBC who just edged ahead.

The result was a win for RUBC novices over Ortner BC by 3/4 of a length, a great victory for the guys.

Racing was followed by a BBQ and a few beers, then the main event, new for 2006 - the crew tug of war! This was a professional affair, even down to the British competition standard rope. In this competition Ortner had the advantage. The years had benefited the Ortner team and weight was to be the advantage (the odd pair of Rugby boots helped too)! Ortner won by some margin.
